TV5 Monde returns to UPC analogue

The French international broadcaster TV5 Monde will return to the Dutch UPC cable nets in Gelderland, Hilversum and Zuid-Holland South on July 1.
Last year, UPC removed the broadcaster from its entire network, both on the analogue and digital tiers.
However, the channel remained on those part of the UPC network where the local programme council has advised to carry TV5 in basic analogue.
From July, another 700,000 analogue homes will be added thanks to positive advice from four more programme councils.

BBC Worldwide has shifted its BBC Prime international channel from Eutelsats Hot Bird satellite neighbourhood to the Eurobird 9A satellite, but still through satellite services provider Globecast.
Eurobird 9As position at 9 degrees east provides DTH coverage of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
Eutelsat provided BBC Worldwide and Globecast with over 600 ClipSat devices to distribute to cable and DTH operators across the region, enabling them to access both Eurobird 9A and Hot Bird channels from one standard dish.
Globecast has two dedicated transponders on Eurobird 9A tha allow for uplink from both the UK and France.

Tehran blocks broadcasts from BBC
The Iranian Government is jamming BBC broadcasts to the country after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's disputed re-election, the director of the World Service has said.
Peter Horrocks said audiences in Iran, the Middle East and Europe could be affected by the electronic jamming of satellites used to broadcast the BBC Persian TV signal to Iran.
He said: "It seems to be part of a pattern of behaviour by the Iranian authorities to limit the reporting of the aftermath of the disputed election."
He added: "In Tehran, John Simpson and his cameraman were briefly arrested after they had filmed the material for a piece.
"And at least one news agency in Tehran has come under pressure not to distribute internationally any pictures it might have of demonstrations on the streets in Iran."
The BBC launched its Persian-language television channel in January despite it being described by an Iranian minister as contrary to his country's "security".
Gholam Hossein Mohseini Ejehi was quoted by Iran's official IRNA news agency as saying the country would take measures against the channel.
He said: "We don't consider this channel to be appropriate for our security. We will take the necessary measures in this regard."
Last year, an Iranian MP accused the BBC of using the channel to recruit spies. Mohammad Karim Abedi said the corporation was planning on setting up an intelligence network using the launch of the channel as cover.
A BBC spokesman said its only goal was to report on world events in an impartial and editorially independent manner.

British satellite viewers have dozens of free-to-air adult channels available to them, and TV regulator Ofcom is proposing to get much tougher, clarifying the rules on what can - and cannot - be shown to viewers. Last month Richard Desmond, the somewhat notorious publisher and broadcaster, saw channels of his fined £52,500 for breaches of Ofcom's existing code. In 2007 Babeworld was hit with a £25,000 fine after a single complaint was made. Playboy TV was fined £22,500 for "serious and repeated breaches" of Ofcom's rules.
"Ofcom has foud that recent material which has been transmitted without any access restrictions has featured nudity of a strong sexual nature, and sustained sex scenes and sexual language that has not, in some cases, been justified by the context in which the material was transmitted,"says Ofcom's consultation comment.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said: The Premier League is extremely pleased to have added ESPN as a UK rights holder. They have a formidable worldwide reputation and experience in sports and I am sure we will enjoy a long and fruitful relationship with them.
SPL executive chairman Lex Gold pulled the plug on Setanta yesterday, then declared himself confident of delivering an equally lucrative broadcasting deal for the league's member clubs.
He said: Setanta has been unable to meet our extended deadline for the outstanding £3 million payment to the SPL and, in terms of the notice previously issued, our British broadcasting rights for season 2009/10 and beyond revert to us.
We are now actively engaging in the process of selling our domestic broadcasting rights for next season and beyond. But I don't accept that we will have to take a reduced fee.
We have a product that is valuable in the market place.
Meanwhile, Linfield, Glentoran, Coleraine, Cliftonville and Derry City are waiting to hear if the Setanta Sports Cup will kick-off in August.
A statement issued by the Irish FA yesterday read: The Irish Football Association and the Football Association of Ireland today (June 22) agreed with Setanta Sports to postpone the draw of the 2009 Setanta Sports Cup, scheduled to take place on Thursday June 25.
This draw has been postponed at the request of Setanta Sports to give the company an opportunity to gain clarity around a number of market related issues it currently faces.
In the interim, a meeting has been arranged with participating clubs in Dublin on the afternoon of June 25.
IFA president Raymond Kennedy admitted the outlook for the competition could be bleak.

We are left in a wait and see scenario, he admitted.
We were hopeful that Setanta Ireland would survive but if they were an asset, that could be used to pay off something.
There is still uncertainty around, but we have been remaining positive. It is a situation which we will keep monitoring but the Irish FA do not derive any money from Setanta as the host clubs sell those rights.

Sky Deutschland goes HD-only

Sky Deutschland wants retailers and installers to supply new customers with only HD receivers from this summer onwards.
With new customers, only HD-capable receivers which support DVB-S2 and H.264 should be installed, Sky wrote in a letter to dealers and installers, reports the German Digial Fernsehen website. SD receivers should only be installed if customers explicitly do not want HDTV.
The pay-TV operator is recommending Pace and Humax receivers, but any set bearing the Sky HD or Premiere HD logo should suffice to receive the new Sky service. For now, the recommended receivers are the Humax PDR iCord HD with a 160 GB hard disk and the Sky HD 1″ from Pace (Pace DS830NP).
Customers will continue to be able to choose between buying the receiver or renting it from Sky. The operator is supplying the sets at no charge to its dealers and will directly charge its new customers.

RAI launches tourist channel

The Italian state broadcaster RAI will launch Yes Italia, a new international channel aimed at attracting tourist to country, on June 28.
Programming will be in Italian, with subtitles planned in English and Spanish. In Europe, the channel will be part of the RAI bouquet on the Eutelsat Hot Bird. Satellite distribution has also been arranged to reach the Americas.
The channel will highlight beautiful places, food and wine and products made in Italy showing the Italian way of life.
The channel will be distributed by the broadcasters international unit NewCo Rai International.

TF1 will not merge LCI with i-Tele
Frances leading commercial broadcaster TF1 will not merge its 24-hour news channel LCI with rival broadcaster i-Tele, according to a report in Le Figaro, quoting CEO Nonce Paolini.
Paolini also said a French government tax imposed on private TV channels to help fund the revenue shortfall resulting from the advertising ban on public channels is estimated to cost TF1 20m this year. He added that TF1 planned to save 100m between 2008 and 2009 to help fight the economic downturn.
Paoloni also expressed his surprise at the reactions of rival channel M6 to the nomination of Axel Duroux, a member of M6's supervisory board, to the number-two spot at TF1.
M6 is reportedly preparing to take legal action against Duroux for unfair competition and is also considering taking action against TF1
