German public broadcaster ARD is considering terminating the distribution of its main channel, Das Erste, on Eutelsats Hot Bird satellite system at 13° East.
The move is part of a cost saving measure connected with sinking licence fee income, Hans W. Färber, administrative director of ARDs affiliate broadcaster WDR, explains in in-house publication WDR print. Staff and travel costs will also be reduced, he said. Our goal is to leave unaltered the current programme budgets for primetime, nevertheless I cant rule out that the cost saving measures will also affect programmes and their production, explained Färber.
In the coming years everything that does not belong to the core tasks of WDR will have to be examined, Färber said. After a drop in income of almost 100 million last year, WDR is expecting a further drop of almost 50 million by 2012.
With its digital free-to-air distribution on Hot Bird, which falls into WDRs responsibility, Das Erste mainly reaches holiday makers, German nationals living abroad and redistribution partners, such as hotels, in regions which arent covered by Astras footprint (19.2° East).
