orf_2Austrian public broadcaster Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF) appears to be planning to distribute its domestic channel ORF 2 in high definition (HDTV) from December, according to a report by newspaper Der Standard quoting members of ORFs supervisory board.
The reason for the move could be the manifold cultural events which traditionally form part of ORF 2s schedule during the change of the year period, and which have been produced in HDTV for years.
In addition to the New Years concert by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Robert Dornhelms cinema version of the opera La Bohème, which is expected to be shown by ORF 2 on December 12, could also be offered in the new TV technology.
ORF spokesman Pius Strobl did not wish to confirm the information. Its not yet certain when we will offer ORF 2 in HD, he said, adding, however that it was clear that HDTV is the technology of the future. It became known in September that next to ORF 1, plans were also underway to distribute ORF 2 in high definition.
ORF 1 HD was launched in June 2008, screening the complete ORF 1 programming schedule in high definition. Programmes which are not produced in the new TV technology are up converted. The channel is available in Austria via cable, satellite and IPTV.
